We could go on and on. The main idea<br \/>\n here to get is that learning was going to transformed to occur <i>only by listening<\/i>. How ridiculous, right? Rather, Edison believed that one of the technological inventions<br \/>\nhe was involved with and invested in &#8211; the motion picture &#8211; would<br \/>\ndisplace both textbooks and teachers alike.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">&#8220;I believe that the<br \/>\nmotion picture is destined to revolutionize our educational system and<br \/>\nthat in a few years it will supplant largely, if not entirely, the use<br \/>\nof textbooks,&#8221; Edison asserted in 1922. &#8220;I should say that on the<br \/>\naverage we get about two percent efficiency out of schoolbooks as they<br \/>\nare written today. The education of the future, as I see it, will be<br \/>\nconducted through the medium of the motion picture\u2026 where it should be<br \/>\npossible to obtain one hundred percent efficiency.&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/hackeducation.com\/2015\/02\/19\/the-history-of-the-future-of-education\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Watters, 2015<\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">From<br \/>\n 1913 to 1931, we have the age of radio.&nbsp;By 1931, television was<br \/>\ndemonstrated at the Iowa State Fair.&nbsp;Just two years after (so quick if<br \/>\nyou think about it) that <a href=\"https:\/\/library.uni.edu\/collections\/special-collections\/university-archives\/history-television-university-northern-iowa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the University of Iowa started to experiment<\/a><br \/>\n with this medium.&nbsp;The first broadcasts were only video, no audio.<br \/>\nBecause televisions were scarcely available commercially and the signal<br \/>\nwas weak, users who could receive the signal tended to be with five<br \/>\nmiles of the campus and had built their own TVs from parts.&nbsp;If you<br \/>\nwanted to hear sound along with the video, you had to tune in your radio<br \/>\n at the same time. This particular image is associated with his plans<br \/>\n for EPCOT, his Experimental Prototype Community Of Tomorrow.&nbsp;I\u2019d like<br \/>\nto point out that this image is from 1960 when Walt Disney was also<br \/>\nplanning his displays for the 1964 World\u2019s Fair (what would become It&#8217;s A<br \/>\n Small World and The Carousel of Progress). Walt never lived to see<br \/>\nEPCOT open but his flair for looking into the future appeared in the<br \/>\nrides as I will show in a future article.
