In its defense, it was a <i>first-of-its-kind<\/i>&nbsp;course, even if it wasn&#8217;t the very first course in VR. Depending on how to define VR versus XR, groups of this size, 263, have met synchronously in other platforms.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">Boast Much?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\"><a href=\"https:\/\/learningenglish.voanews.com\/a\/us-university-launches-first-full-class-in-virtual-reality\/6355828.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Bailenson defends<\/a>: \u201cTo the best of my knowledge, nobody has networked hundreds of students<br \/>\n(with) VR headsets for months at a time in the history of virtual<br \/>\nreality, or even in the history of teaching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stanfordvr.com\/mm\/2022\/10\/VRinVR.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Further, he states<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 40px;text-align: left\"><span class=\"markedContent\" id=\"page332R_mcid1844\" style=\"font-family: helvetica\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\" style=\"font-size: calc(var(--scale-factor)*9.50px);left: calc(var(--scale-factor)*209.00px);top: calc(var(--scale-factor)*644.30px)\">The scale of this<\/span><\/span><span class=\"markedContent\" id=\"page332R_mcid1845\" style=\"font-family: helvetica\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\" style=\"font-size: calc(var(--scale-factor)*9.50px);left: calc(var(--scale-factor)*209.00px);top: calc(var(--scale-factor)*655.80px)\"> course is what sets it apart compared<\/span><\/span><span class=\"markedContent\" id=\"page332R_mcid1846\" style=\"font-family: helvetica\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\" style=\"font-size: calc(var(--scale-factor)*9.50px);left: calc(var(--scale-factor)*209.00px);top: calc(var(--scale-factor)*667.30px)\"> to other \u201cin-VR\u201d courses. It was not deeply explained, <a href=\"https:\/\/learningenglish.voanews.com\/a\/us-university-launches-first-full-class-in-virtual-reality\/6355828.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>:<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 40px;text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">In addition to the headsets, the course also needed software to connect<br \/>\nthe students and teachers. For this, Bailenson said the university<br \/>\ndecided to use the ENGAGE virtual communication system. <a class=\"wsw__a\" href=\"https:\/\/engagevr.io\/\">ENGAGE<\/a> is used by major companies and educational organizations to hold virtual meetings and events.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">A Big Problem<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\"><br \/>I looked at some of the film clips closely. I searched and the early clips appear to be deleted off of YouTube.&nbsp; I have facilitated small and large events in XR.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">In the video clips of this course, I can detect that <b>sound<\/b> appeared to be a somewhat major problem in the platform; getting users to hear, signal that they could hear, or having multiple groups in one space (like a lab) and hear over top of each other.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">The Headsets<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">Learners in the course received the Quest 2 headsets.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 40px;text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">&#8220;Virtual Reality is becoming mainstream, with more than ten million<br \/>\nsystems being used in the United States alone. Stanford<br \/>\nUniversity uses Meta&#8217;s headsets in its courses on VR, said Jeremy<br \/>\nBailenson, the founding director of the institution&#8217;s Virtual Human<br \/>\nInteraction Lab. To ensure student privacy,<b> the lab had to seek Meta&#8217;s help in creating anonymized accounts for classroom use. <\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edsurge.com\/news\/2022-06-01-with-money-from-facebook-10-colleges-turn-their-campuses-into-metaversities\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">This article<\/a> comes right out and says this: <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">And money for the project\u2014as well as&nbsp;<b>donated VR headsets <\/b>for students at<br \/>\n the participating colleges\u2014comes from Meta, the company that owns<br \/>\nFacebook.  <br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">The connection between Facebook Meta and Stanford <a href=\"The course attracted some attention last week when it was mentioned by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on his Facebook profile, where he revealed that the students are all using Quest 2 headsets.  Stanford University has a strong history with VR, with the Stanford VR Experience tour playing a strong role in Mark Zuckerberg\u2019s decision to purchase Oculus in 2014.\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">has been documented<\/a>.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">While the experience was good in that, at the beginning of trying out any new technology, there will be false starts. Said another way, it is good to learn that bringing in 30 learners to one large-ish lab space to teach separate labs of 5 people each won&#8217;t work if there is flat sound. That has be learned. I think his course showed that.<\/p>\n<p>But overall,<b> conducting a course with donated technology and then turning around and saying the learning was great* is a conflict of interest.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>I found a written summary <a href=\"https:\/\/stanfordvr.com\/mm\/2022\/10\/VRinVR.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, but it&#8217;s <i>light <\/i>on conclusions. There a few glimmers, but otherwise, they did seem to hint that the groups versus sound problems that appeared in the video <b>did<\/b> happen.<\/p>\n<p>* What does &#8220;the learning was great&#8221; actually mean?&nbsp; <a href=\"Designing a model for classrooms inside virtual reality. Communication Education, 73(2), 234-243.\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Bailenson and Han claimed<\/a> better presence, enjoyment, motivation, and transfer. While I could let you consider if any of those deserve merit, I railed against the conclusions of the course in my <a href=\"https:\/\/heatheredodds.blogspot.com\/2024\/10\/the-immersive-environment-delusion-part.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Immersion Delusion post<\/a>.&nbsp; This post, being written more than 2 years before I hit publish, focuses on the hype just as the course was starting. Therefore, obviously, this particular post does not hit hard on hype versus results. It only focuses on hype and the conflict of interest of hitting the airwaves with how amazing your course must be, to be a first of its kind, learning about VR in VR, yada yada yada.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[EDIT: I decided to publish this post on 12\/26\/2025.
