Truly, my focus has<br \/>\nbeen on bringing new clients into VR experiences, explaining the<br \/>\nbenefits and challenges, and customizing a solution for their own needs.<br \/>\n I love doing this work!<\/p>\n<p>So here is an example of service design experience that I did for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http%3A%2F%2Fieeevr.org%2F&amp;sa=D&amp;sntz=1&amp;usg=AFQjCNEduUZuCdlkXUTp5xYrhhuVIHd7pg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">IEEE VR<\/a> Conference in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>First, as I stated my remarks at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tmxjxTyjmqI&amp;list=PLXXbKjcWXDqz-7xnBDLUKi3eUA7FPqI-k&amp;index=5&amp;t=613s\" target=\"_blank\">Opening Ceremony<\/a><br \/>\n (held at 3:30 a.m. my time, 8:30 a.m. Lisbon, Portugal time), the<br \/>\ninstitution that I worked for pursued getting this particular client<br \/>\nbecause they were an ideal fit with similar mission and demographics.<br \/>\nAdditionally, both organizations had switched on online conferences in<br \/>\n2020 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fieeevr.org%2F2020%2F&amp;sa=D&amp;sntz=1&amp;usg=AFQjCNEbOaaBw8wxdsvkpIo2hSP5Y6jfbw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">IEEE VR to Mozilla Hubs<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fimmersivelrn.org%2Filrn2020%2F&amp;sa=D&amp;sntz=1&amp;usg=AFQjCNHmEFO9-ZtemnsPjDCCp6-ruCFYig\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">iLRN<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.virbela.com&amp;sa=D&amp;sntz=1&amp;usg=AFQjCNFLev1OfTJSWPq6TSHIJ7ExbL8oag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Virbela<\/a>)<br \/>\n and so we shared the common ground of bringing large amounts of users<br \/>\ninto new virtual spaces. We won the contract to host their posters,<br \/>\ndoctoral consortium, demo, 3DUI contest, and video presentations on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fimmersivelrn.org%2Filrn-virtual-campus%2F&amp;sa=D&amp;sntz=1&amp;usg=AFQjCNF6gfx8P7L1uawS_0JyMJ9F5gDjtg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">iLRN Virtual Campus<\/a><br \/>\n powered by Virbela. (The rest of their program was handled on Zoom,<br \/>\nYouTube, and Twitch.) Out of this one 7 day event, 3 brand new in-VR conference events started and I was part of all of them. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>All<br \/>\n of these events had a theme to them: they used the basic affordances of<br \/>\n the platform and put those pieces together in a new way.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Said another way, these events were <b>not<\/b> pushing the VR boundary. They used the VR platform <i>in ways it could perfectly perform<\/i> and thus the execution was great! Think: using basic legos, <b>not a kit<\/b>, to build something like the Millennium Falcon.<\/p>\n<h2>Treasure Hunt <b>Ready Player 21<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Just<br \/>\n a few weeks before the conference opened, our island gained the ability<br \/>\n to passcode spaces. This meant that users needed to enter a code into a<br \/>\n pop-up box in order to teleport or arrive in a specific space (usually a<br \/>\n meeting room). One of the conference organizers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/rob-lindeman-5514978\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rob Lindeman<\/a>,<br \/>\n listened as we described the basic features of the passcode system and<br \/>\nhe realized that he could create a treasure hunt game. He called it <b>Ready Player 21<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.lindeman.com%2Fvr2021%2Flive.shtml&amp;sa=D&amp;sntz=1&amp;usg=AFQjCNFWPT0Wf_4hDAztzKReFiKr3141YQ\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.lindeman.com\/vr2021\/live.shtml<\/a><br \/>\n (This landing page has 1,211 hits as of October 13, 2021. There are four keys in all,<br \/>\n and the first person to find all four of them and reach the final room<br \/>\nwill receive an extra special prize.<\/p>\n<p>Half a billion&#8230;No, wait&#8230;I mean an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 graphics card!<\/p>\n<p>There<br \/>\n are leader boards displayed around the campus, and each time someone<br \/>\nfinds a key, their name will be added to the leaderboard, along with the<br \/>\n time of earning the key.<\/p>\n<p>If you would like to take part in this adventure, please use the QR code that you find below.<\/p>\n<p>Good luck!*\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>As<br \/>\n I was part of the support crew, I could not participate to win the<br \/>\nprize but I had fun visiting the first 2 rooms to check out their<br \/>\nfunction and I actually solved the puzzles! (I\u2019m good at lateral<br \/>\nthinking.) <\/p>\n<p> When the treasure hunt game opened, there were QR<br \/>\ncodes placed around the Campus inside of images and participants ran<br \/>\naround collecting them&#8211; mistakenly thinking that just collecting QR<br \/>\ncodes would win the game. The QR codes, however, were only the START of<br \/>\nthe game. I<br \/>\nasked her how she completed all of the puzzles and she said \u201cyou just<br \/>\nhave to be very detail-oriented!\u201d I\u2019m sure she\u2019s going on to great<br \/>\nthings. One of the organizers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/francisco-simoes-73338718\/\" target=\"_blank\">Francisco Simoes<\/a>,<br \/>\n had realized that we could make for them a large office space of 36<br \/>\noffices that each had private sound (sound restricted to inside that<br \/>\nspace). So with some added Portugal theming and a few ground rules, we<br \/>\ninstituted \u201cScientific Speed Dating\u201d when networkers could just show up<br \/>\nand meet new people every few minutes. You could see into the office from outside.<\/p>\n<p>A<br \/>\n team suite is a group of offices bound together by a common floor.<br \/>\nSound is NOT spatial or isolated, sound is flat so therefore &#8220;traffic<br \/>\ncontrol&#8221; could be done by voice by being in one spot and describing or<br \/>\nsaying a number and you could be heard a hallway away.<\/p>\n<p>The ground rules were very easy and I was drafted to be the <b><i>Master of Ceremonies<\/i><\/b> so I kept repeating these rules all through the hour.<\/p>\n<p>Rule 1: Find an office.<\/p>\n<p>Rule 2: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If there is no one in it, go in it! <\/li>\n<li>If there is one person in it, go in it! <\/li>\n<li>If there are 2 people in, don\u2019t go in it! We discovered that<br \/>\n numbered offices, therefore, were better than named offices because<br \/>\nfolks could navigate by looking for a increasing or decreasing number.<\/p>\n<p>In all, the event was <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/N5YuIA4duiI?t=125\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a great success!<\/a><br \/>\n We actually ran it twice with 36 available offices. From the F7 dance command to longer robot<br \/>\ndancing, it didn\u2019t take long for the IEEE VR organizers to realize that<br \/>\nif everyone synchronized their dancing, it would look like a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/wh3i3vWgPyk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">flash mob<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We put a flash mob on the agenda and LOTS of folks showed up! We often worked<br \/>\n simultaneously in multiple systems: Discord, Virbela, etc. In a classy<br \/>\nmaneuver, the conference chair, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jorgej\/\" target=\"_blank\">Joaquim Jorg<\/a>e, also made sure that he treated his volunteers with the utmost respect, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2Fi%2Fstatus%2F1377903490404646912&amp;sa=D&amp;sntz=1&amp;usg=AFQjCNG5p3ENkfdcRkqD1_I8WSjm0snnFQ\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dancing with them<\/a>,<br \/>\n inviting them to virtual drinks at the rooftop bar, and trusting them<br \/>\ncompletely with projects like organizing volunteer coverage.<\/p>\n<p><b>The combined effort led to the LARGEST IEEE VR conference ever!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>In<br \/>\n summary, the design experience used the basic affordances of the<br \/>\nplatform, passcoded rooms, sound-isolated rooms, and dancing avatars,<br \/>\nand created unique and successful VR events. It was not the case that we<br \/>\n imported unique objects or transported the users to phantasmagorical<br \/>\nlocations. The entire Virbela platform is a software download that looks<br \/>\n very traditionally like conference and meeting rooms.
