Silly me. I&#8217;ve got to give this good stuff away. I&#8217;m like the<br \/>\nGrinch whose heart grew three sizes that day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b style=\"font-family: helvetica\">Why should I keep reading this?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">First,<br \/>\n my credentials, because adults want to know why they should keep<br \/>\nreading this. What do I know about this remote online stuff anyway? I<br \/>\nhave 15 years experience working full time online which means I was<br \/>\nworking full time online 3 years before the iPhone existed. I&#8217;ve built<br \/>\nand rebuilt fully online virtual teams. I have two advanced degrees in<br \/>\nonline work. I feel passionately about the positive future of working<br \/>\nremotely. Within this amazing digital nether, how do we stay connected, <i>as humans<\/i>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">As Mario says, here we go!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b style=\"font-family: helvetica\"><u>General ideas<\/u><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\"><b>Group doodle<\/b> &#8211;<i>aka<\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/hannahsstudyincreativity.wordpress.com\/2014\/04\/12\/creativity-test-torrance-test-of-creative-thinking\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Incomplete Figures<\/a> (and an idea I had from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/iamerikwahl\" target=\"_blank\">Erik Wahl<\/a>):<br \/>\n 5 minutes before a meeting starts, I open a whiteboard to share. I draw<br \/>\n just part of basic shape (i.e. half a star, half a circle, 2\/3 of a<br \/>\ntriangle) and then invite everyone to add to the doodle while we just<br \/>\nchatted. I took care of scientists so invariably, every doodle ended up<br \/>\nwith the Starship Enterprise in it somewhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\"><b>MadLibs<\/b><br \/>\n &#8211; these are easy to make and most folks know the premise. Ask them for a<br \/>\n series of nouns, adjectives, verbs, exclamations, etc. and fill those<br \/>\nwords into a pre-made<a href=\"https:\/\/images.app.goo.gl\/2pQ6UGkuHmvUD8DbA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> short story<\/a>. Giggles and hilarity will ensue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\"><b>Get a running joke and keep it running<\/b><br \/>\n &#8211; My team decided that at every point when we wondered whose &#8220;fault&#8221;<br \/>\nsomething was, we&#8217;d blame the San Andreas Fault. We had geologists, so<br \/>\nthat joke always worked. Other jokes: I used to play Paul Simon&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/uq-gYOrU8bA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">You Can Call Me Al<\/a>&#8221;<br \/>\n every time our network went down because it was the one song I had on<br \/>\nmy hard drive. This one is good in a pinch because everyone can find a hat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\"><b>Within Reach <\/b>&#8211; Pick up an object within arms reach (being on webcam keeps this honest) and explain what it means to you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\"><b>Favorite superhero or villain and why?<\/b><br \/>\n Mine is The Rhino from Spiderman 1960. So what that it&#8217;s basically a<br \/>\nman in gray snuggie? When he is mad, he runs into things. I love <i>the<\/i> <i>simplicity<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\"><b>Old English Day.<\/b><br \/>\n Everyone who makes an appropriate comment using Old English can leave<br \/>\nthe meeting 10 minutes early. It can be interesting to go 40 minutes<br \/>\ninto an online meeting when your quiet team member appropriately uses<br \/>\n&#8220;thither&#8221; and you think &#8220;<i>Wow, how long have you been holding that in?<\/i>&#8221; The comments must work <i>in context <\/i>like &#8220;Let us parlay by the glowing embers of thou&#8217;st certain demise.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\"><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/IcjSDZNbOs0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Bizarro World<\/b><\/a><b> Project.<\/b><br \/>\n When assigned a project that you know is truly ridiculous (and no one<br \/>\nelse is checking), do the opposite project. My team was assigned some<br \/>\ntraining on customer service. We were spectacular at customer service.<br \/>\nSo I had them do the opposite: create fake recordings on giving the<br \/>\nworst customer service possible. The recordings became the best training<br \/>\n videos because they showed what not to do, <i>and why!<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><u style=\"font-family: helvetica\">Calendar ideas<\/u><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\"><b>September 19: Talk Like A Pirate Day.<\/b> Everyone signs into a meeting with their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.piratequiz.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pirate name<\/a> instead of their real name and we have to figure out who is who.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\"><b>October:<\/b> Since the theme of October is Halloween, <b>play up &#8220;scary.&#8221;<\/b><br \/>\n Make a &#8220;most scary question&#8221; matching game having your team submit<br \/>\ntheir scariest work question and create a matching game. Whose scary<br \/>\nquestion is that? Add on: Photoshop their standard work photo into a<br \/>\nscary photo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\"><b>November: The Thanksgiving table.<\/b> Remotely, this one is brilliant because the virtual table <i>expands<\/i><br \/>\n to fit everyone. Invite everyone to share something for which they are<br \/>\nthankful. This works well synchronously or asynchronously.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\"><b>December: <\/b>Obviously, <b>ugly sweater contests<\/b> completely work online.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\"><b>January: Haiku time. <\/b>Deep<br \/>\n quiet winter. Contemplation. Minimum words for minimum temperatures.<br \/>\nRun a Haiku contest but downplay &#8216;contest&#8217;. Instead, just make it about<br \/>\nsingular voices piercing the cold.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\"><b>March: Limericks.<\/b><br \/>\n Run a limerick contest. Set a theme (mine were always science<br \/>\nlimericks). Keep it clean! Have a Guest Judge&#8217;s Award and a People&#8217;s<br \/>\nChoice Award.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\"><b>March 14th, Pi Day.<\/b> Get your numbers-can-be-lines&#8230;err&#8230;pies groove going. At the very least, everyone picks their favorite pie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\"><b>April: Earth Month! Working remotely is a very green action!!<\/b><br \/>\n Do you know how many mayors of major cities would love to take 50,000<br \/>\ncommuters off their highways everyday to ease congestion? <i>That&#8217;s already you, remote worker!<\/i><br \/>\n But don&#8217;t stop there. Share one new green commitment you are going to<br \/>\nmake this year. You could also host a panel of contributors. I used to<br \/>\nhost a &#8220;State of the Earth&#8221; presentation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><u style=\"font-family: helvetica\">The Point<\/u><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">The<br \/>\n point is to use the strengths of working online to your advantage to<br \/>\nconnect. If it is important to you to have more connected workers for<br \/>\nbetter communication and productivity (<a href=\"https:\/\/search.proquest.com\/openview\/8f4ac52531c53fe337aab347dbb1f996\/1?pq-origsite=gscholar&amp;cbl=18750&amp;diss=y\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zappala, 2007<\/a>), it only makes sense to go for your strengths when working remotely. Strengths I&#8217;ve included:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">Creativity<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">Equal contributions from all<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">Offline\/offstage meeting prep<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">No schlepping a crock pot through the parking lot.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">Yeah,<br \/>\n I didn&#8217;t add &#8220;working in your pajamas&#8221; because remote workers get<br \/>\ntossed a lot of shade for that. We also have cats that sit on our<br \/>\nkeyboards and dogs that bark at amazingly inappropriate times. I believe<br \/>\n <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/larryalton\/2017\/03\/07\/are-remote-workers-more-productive-than-in-office-workers\/#2ca4f3ae31f6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">we are more productive <\/a>and I just like it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica\">Sure, I&#8217;ve missed 15 years of office trick or treating, but then again, the entire bag of Reese Peanut Butter Cups <u>is for me<\/u>. Sorry, not sorry.
